Una vez me enteré de la historia de un niño oriundo de un pintoresco pueblo de Colorado. Todos los días de la semana, él iba a una escuela normal con niños normales. Sus calificaciones eran buenas, pero los demás niños no eran muy amables con él. Se metían con él cada vez que podían, esperando que se quebrara. Pero no se quebró. De hecho, él corría de la escuela a su casa todos los días rebosando de felicidad, porque sabía que su madre estaría allí para animarlo. Tan pronto como entraba por la puerta, un labrador blanco saldría de la nada para lamerle la cara. Caminaba por el pasillo y las pinturas lo saludaban. La comida siempre sabía increíble y los platos se limpiaban solos. Después de comer, él corría a la sala y veía la televisión con su madre. Él jamás olvidaría sus dorados rizos imposiblemente suaves.

Un día, la mamá del niño empezó a actuar muy extraño. Le dijo al niño que tomara otras rutas a casa para evitar ser visto y que nunca hablara con nadie en la escuela. Se enojaba cuando el niño preguntaba por qué. Con el tiempo, todo en la casa empezó a ir mal. El labrador se convirtió en un asador y las pinturas pasaron de óleo a ser de acuarelas.

Un par de días después, la mamá del niño lo despertó antes de que amaneciera. Parecía asustada. Mientras miraba alrededor de su cuarto, vio que todas sus cosas estaban empacadas en cajas. Ella le dijo que cruzarían la frontera para esconderse de alguien. Rompió su teléfono, quitó el GPS de su carro y se fue con el niño.

Aunque extrañaba su casa, al niño le encantaba el paseo. Sus ojos estaban pegados a la ventana mientras miraba las montañas y valles de Wyoming y Montana pasar a su lado. Su mamá se preocupó mucho cuando lo vio mirando por la ventana y la cubrió con una manta. Él se mareó y quiso salir, pero ella no lo dejó. Le dijo que era por su propio bien.

Finalmente llegaron a un pueblo canadiense con un nombre que no le dijeron al niño. El hotel en el que se quedaron olía muy mal, y las demás personas que vivían ahí parecían peligrosas. Las paredes descascaradas eran de un amarillo enfermo, y si pegaba la oreja a la pared, podía oír ratas.

La mamá del niño intentó actuar como si todo estuviese bien, pero él sabía que no era así. Trató de hacer que todo fuese normal, pero la habitación del hotel se volvía más mágica cuanto más tiempo se quedaba. En vez de un labrador, el niño se despertaba y a veces veía un bulldog agonizando a los pies de su cama. Las pinturas habían vuelto, pero gritaban cuando alguien pasaba. Cada vez que usaban los platos, éstos cambiaban de forma de círculos, a cuadrados, a hexágonos, y a círculos nuevamente.

A veces la mamá del niño se despertaba en medio de la noche gritando. Ella lo despertaría y darían un agradable paseo juntos. Mientras el niño miraba las llanuras alfombradas de hierba que se extendían infinitamente y con su madre despeinando sus rizos castaños, supo que todo estaría bien.

Su madre se calmó luego de una o dos semanas. Salían a cenar todas las noches y conocían al dueño del restaurante. A veces se sentaba y cenaba con ellos. Era muy divertido.

En días aburridos, el niño y su mamá escalaban una montaña cercana. Él se cansaba rápido, pero una vez llegaban a la cima, pensaron que podían ver el mundo entero.

Un mes después de su viaje, el niño se fue a la cama zumbando de la emoción. Cuando despierte, tendrá exactamente diez años. Su madre le dice que tiene algo especial planeado. ¿Qué podría ser? ¿Vendrá el dueño del restaurante? ¿Escalarían una montaña aún más alta? Él solo no podía esperar.

Se despertó temprano a la mañana siguiente tras escuchar unos fuegos artificiales muy fuertes en la habitación de su mamá. ¡Eso era! Ella debió haber creado fuegos artificiales mágicos para su cumpleaños. Él siempre hablaba de cómo amaba los fuegos artificiales y cómo soñaba con montar uno él mismo. Salió disparado de su cama a una velocidad sorprendente y corrió hacia la habitación de su madre.

Pero no encontró fuegos artificiales.

Mamá aún estaba en la cama, y parecía que ahí se quedaría. En vez de su cara había un montón de músculo y cerebros. Sus sábanas blancas estaban manchadas de un rojo carmesí. A su izquierda estaban dos hombres de aspecto importante. Uno tenía una escopeta negra y el otro estaba de pie con ambas manos en los bolsillos, fumando algo. Ambos tenían el símbolo de una estrella azul en el bolsillo del pecho. Los hombres miraron al chico. Uno se burló lamentablemente y luego le ofreció un cigarrillo al niño. El chico vomitó, y luego se desmayó.

Él no recuerda nada de esto. Tampoco los estudiantes de Colorado, ni el dueño del restaurante. Los hombres de la estrella azul se aseguraron de que fuera así. Fue adoptado por una tranquila pareja de ancianos en una pequeña granja en Texas. Al principio fue difícil, pero aprendió a cultivar. Ama su granja, y ella lo ama a él.

Ahora, el niño pasa las mañanas corriendo por los campos de maíz y las tardes las pasa alimentando a los cerdos. Pero, de vez en cuando, justo antes de quedarse dormido, ve el rostro destrozado de su madre mirándolo fijamente. No sabe quién es esta mujer, pero sabe que lo amaba.
